Dual SIM Motorola Android phone coming to India...

Motorola's Glam, which is available in China as XT800 ZHISHANG, offers 3G enabled dual (GSM+CDMA) SIM device. The phone runs on Android 2.2 and has an HDMI port, Wifi, 5 mega pixel auto focus camera and A-GPS. It is the first 3G dual SIM mobile in India.

Motorola Glam is expected to be launched in India next week. It will be the first 3G capable dual SIM Android phone in the market. The phone is most likely to feature Android 2.2 Froyo, although it currently runs on version 2.1 in China and Korea. Glam will also be the first dual SIM phone with 3G capability to run on both CDMA and GSM networks.

For the consumer it will offer an excellent choice of opting for GSM technology for voice and CDMA for cheaper high speed data access. The phone has a decent specification list with an HDMI port, Wifi, Bluetooth along with 3G, GSM and CDMA connectivity. Motorola Glam has a 3.7 inch landscape touch display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels.

The device has built-in GPS navigation and most likely comes with Google Maps. Glam supports viewing and editing of popular document formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF. It also has an A4 paper optical-character recognition software combined with translation features. The phone has a 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, autofocus and digital zoom.

Video can be watched on an HDTV by connecting the phone to the TV using its HDMI (720p) output. A 3.5 mm jack for a headphone has been provided, but ear pieces need to be bought in addition to the phone. Motorola claims that the Glam lasts for approximately 5.7 hours of talk time or 4 days on standby on a full charge of its 1390 mAh battery. The phone is light weight at 137 grams and measuring 120 x 61.8 x 11.4 mm, it is pretty sleek as well.

CDMA Windows Phone 7 Devices, Cut and Paste on the Way

Microsoft has seen early hardware designs for CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices but isn't saying anything more than that the final products will be out in the first half of the year.

"The timeline is not dictated by us, at some point," said Aaron Woodman , director of Microsoft's mobile communications business. He said the software for the CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) version is almost done and that Microsoft has seen some early hardware designs. But the final release date is dependant on the hardware makers.

Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 on the GSM standard with T-Mobile and AT&T in the U.S., as well as with operators around the world, late last year. It has said that CDMA versions of the phones would follow this year.

"We have good working relationships with Sprint and Verizon. We've worked with them both in the past," Woodman said. Sprint and Verizon have CDMA networks in the U.S.

Observers have speculated that Microsoft and Verizon hit a rough patch with the launch of Microsoft's Kin phones. While neither company revealed sales figures, the phones are thought to have sold poorly. Shortly after launch, Microsoft stopped development of the Kin platform.

In addition to the CDMA versions of the phones, Microsoft is working on the first update to the Windows Phone 7 operating system. The update will let users cut and paste and will also include performance upgrades. In a demonstration that showed a phone with the current-generation software next to a phone with the updated software, a game loaded noticeably faster on the updated phone.

Microsoft has not quite completed its "rigorous test process" for the new software but has begun offering the mobile operators early views of the update, Woodman said. The company is also packaging software updates from the OEMs into the update, he said.

To get the updated software, users will have to connect their phones to their computers and download the update, rather than receiving it over the air. Other phone makers, such as Apple, have a similar requirement.

Woodman could not shed any light on when Microsoft might offer updates that would make the phones more appealing to security-conscious enterprise customers. Experts say Windows Phone 7 falls behind both the iPhone and Android phones in terms of security and management features. Woodman noted that those phone makers also started out with few features that appeal to enterprises but that they matured by adding capabilities to attract different niche markets.

Samsung to Release Galaxy Media Player...

SEOUL—Samsung Electronics Co. will sell a stripped-down version of its successful Galaxy S smartphone as a digital media player, the first major product introduction since its cellphone division took control of the portable media player business earlier this year.

With the move, Samsung will round out a series of Galaxy-named gadgets that matches product for product with Apple Inc.'s line of iPods, iPad and iPhone.

Samsung will have the Galaxy Player, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy smartphone. All use a variation of Google Inc.'s Android operating system and work with apps developed for it.

The product has been rumored for months and some Internet shopping sites in South Korea have created Web pages for it that said "coming soon." Samsung formally announced it on Monday and said it would be available in South Korea next month, though it didn't set a shipping date. No price was announced, but pricing will depend on amount of built-in storage.

Samsung is aiming to roll it out in other countries in the April to June period and will display it at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.

The product, called the Galaxy Player YP-GB1, matches most of the specifications of its Galaxy S phone, though its 4-inch touchscreen uses a liquid crystal display instead of newer organic LED and its operating system will be a more advanced version of Android. The gadget is 9.9 millimeters thick and weighs 121 grams.

The Android-based media player gives Samsung a chance to breathe new life into its media player business, which has long languished behind Apple and, for several years, a small South Korean manufacturer called iRiver Inc.

Samsung's phone division took control of development and sale of media player products earlier this year from the company's main consumer electronics division, which is the largest maker of TVs and also makes audio gear, computers and printers. Executives had long struggled with the direction of the portable player business.

Kim Jong-in, a vice president of product planning, said the company would not use the Yepp name, which it has used for other digital media players, for the Android-based media players. "We will use a Galaxy Player brand for the Galaxy series world-wide and the Yepp brand for normal media players in Korea," Mr. Kim said.

In an initial statement earlier this week, Samsung said it would sell the media player only through wireless carriers, but Mr. Kim said the company will offer it through retailers as well.
