Violence, Suicide, and Injury prevention

Violence, suicide, and injury are all too prevalent in our society. For instance, globally:

* Violence is among the leading causes of death worldwide for people ages 15-44;
* Violence costs the world billions of dollars annually in terms of days lost from work, law enforcement, and lost investment.

In the United States:

* We have one of the highest rates of death from homicide among industrialized nations;
* Suicide was the eleventh-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of death in young people in 2002;
* Injuries from motor vehicle crashes, drowning, burns, and falls are the leading cause of death for people up to age 35.

The widespread impact of these problems on individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to prevention. HHD seeks to alter the many factors that contribute to violence, suicide, and injury by conducting research on the effectiveness of prevention strategies, evaluating prevention programs, and providing training, technical assistance, and publications to professionals working in health and education to strengthen their capacity to prevent violence, suicide, and injury.

Several of our centers and their projects address issues of violence, suicide, and injury:
