Nintendo Wii successor coming in 2012

New York: The successor to Nintendo's hit Wii console will arrive next year. In disclosing its plans Monday, Nintendo Co. didn't say what the new system will do. The Japanese company plans to show a playable model of the new console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which runs June 7-9 in Los Angeles.

Nintendo has dominated sales of video game consoles and sold 86 million Wiis since launching it in 2006. The Wii caused a splash with its innovative motion-sensing controller. Sports-style games such as baseball and boxing let players move their arms to simulate the pitching of a ball or the throwing of a punch. Nintendo also makes a step-board accessory, the Wii Fit, that allows players to try dance steps or yoga.

The Wii setup has been copied and elaborated on by the other major console makers since then.

But the Wii is showing its age. Even when it launched, it was behind the other consoles of the era, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, in not offering a high-definition image.

The modest hardware of the Wii has also meant that while Sony and Microsoft have been able to update their consoles with new capabilities, the Wii has seen only relatively minor updates, such as addition of the optional Wii Fit and the ability to play Netflix movies.

Microsoft launched its Kinect game-control system last fall. Using a 3-D camera, depth sensors and voice-recognition software, it recognizes your face, voice and gestures as you move around and talk, without requiring you to hold a controller or wear a headset. Sony, meanwhile, began selling a Move controller that is essentially a higher-tech version of the Wii remote.

Nintendo announced plans for the Wii successor as part of its financial results Monday. Nintendo said its annual earnings dropped for the second straight year as sales declined. It's expecting sales to increase again in the fiscal year that just started, thanks to its new handheld 3DS device, which launched last month.

Hitachi’s 320GB 7mm Hard Drive - Amazing Product...

It’s a new hard drive by Hitachi. This hard drive for ultra-light PCs that’s 26% thinner...

At the behest of equipment manufacturers looking to build a new class of ultra-thin notebooks, Hitachi GST announced today it will begin shipping quarter-inch thick hard drives — 26% slimmer than the current drives in most laptops and netbooks today.

Collins said upcoming ultra-light notebooks for which the new drives are being produced target a market segment between low-end netbooks and high-end, ultra-thin notebooks, such as the Macbook Air. The ultra-light notebooks are expected to roll out in the third quarter of the year.

Hitachi’s new Z-series drives are .27-in thick and have a single spinning platter with up to 320GB capacity, the same capacity as the company’s .37-inch thick, single-platter predecessors. Collins said Hitachi is not releasing a suggested retail price because it sells to equipment manufactures or resellers, who then determine the pricingThe first one, such as the Seagate Momentus XT (500GB), is the most popular and used in most notebooks and other 2.5-inch-based storage applications. The 12.5mm standard, such as the 1TB WD Corpio Blue, is a newer standard that offers higher capacities but can only fit in later models of laptop computers. The third, 7mm tier is used for ultraportable applications, such as Netbooks or tablet PCs. For a long time, this ultracompact tier of internal hard drive was known to be slow and come with limited storage capacities.

Hitachi unveiled Tuesday its latest in ultraslim hard drives, the Z-series of TravelStar and CinemaStar. The TravelStar is for ultraportable computing devices, whereas the CinemaStar is for audio and video (AV) streaming.

Hitachi said the drive slim down was prompted by laptop manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo and Aser, which are all planning to produce thinner, lighter notebooks. The new hard drives, however, will serve multiple markets, including television set-top boxes and portable video players, Collins said.

It’s the world’s first 320GB hard disk drive to spin at 7,200 RPM in a 7-mm high package — take that Seagate. The 2.5-inch Serial ATA 3Gbps Travelstar Z7K320 features a 1,334Mbps max transfer rate assisted by a 16MB cache. The HDD draws 1.8 watts during read/write operations and 0.8 watts on lower-power idle while humming along at 23dB when idle or 24dB when seeking. And that skinny 7-mm form factor means it’ll go places no standard 9.5-mm thick drive could even dream of when it hits the mass production lines in August.

Despite the ultrathin design, the new Z-series hard drives share the same port configuration with other 9mm SATA hard drives and therefore can be used in any application where other 2.5-inch SATA hard drives are used.

The Z-series includes three drives: the Travelstar Z7K320, a 7200rpm drive with 16MB cache for use in higher-performance notebooks, ultra portables and netbooks; the Travelstar Z5K320, a 5400rpm drive with 8MB cache with lower power usage, lower cost and quieter acoustics for mobile and ultra-portables; and the CinemaStar Z5K320, a 5400rpm drive with 8MB cache for use in A/V streaming devices such as set-top boxes, portable video players, DVR-enabled TVs and video surveillance systems.

Hard drives with a single disk platter represent about 70% of the PC drive market today, according to Brendan Collins, vice president of marketing at Hitachi GST. Two-disk drives provide 1TB and 2TB capacities.

The new slimmer drives are mechanically compatible with their thicker predecessors, meaning their serial ATA connection and side mounting holes are the same so that the drives are interchangeable in laptops.

SSDs can be 17 times the cost of a hard disk drive and and 1.8-inch drives can be up to seven times more expensive on a cost-per-gigabyte basis when compared to the new Hitachi Z-series drives, the company stated in its marketing material.

According to market research firm Forward Insights, for PC, notebook and netbook manufacturers, SSD prices are around $1.90 per gigabyte today. Hard drives cost about 30 cents per gigabyte.

Hitachi says the new drives are currently shipping in volumes to OEM manufacturers, so it’s unclear how much they cost individually. However, according to Hitachi, they offers the most cost-effective storage solution in terms of cost per gigabyte, especially when compared with that of solid-state drives.

APPLE - Time Capsule

The 2009 version of Apple’s Time Capsule combines the mundane tasks of networking, file sharing, and backups into one device, and it includes some cool new features to boot. Time Capsule, basically an Airport Extreme base station with a 500GB or 1TB internal hard drive, is designed to be a wireless Time Machine target for one or more Macs as well as a NAS (network attached storage) device.

Time Capsule’s marquee feature is its ability to back up your Macs running Leopard using Time Machine over the network. Apple recommends that you connect your Mac directly to the Time Capsule for the first backup, which makes a copy of all files on your Mac; backing up that much data takes a long time over the network. I backed up my MacBook Pro’s 120GB of data to each Time Capsule connected via Gigabit Ethernet and it took a little over nine hours to complete the first backup.

After that initial backup, Time Machine will back up to the Time Capsule every hour (unless the Mac has been powered down or the previous backup took longer than an hour). These hourly backups are incremental—that is, they back up only files that have changed, or have been added since the last backup. Such backups take less time and are generally handily accomplished over a wireless connection. One thing to remember is that Time Machine backs up at the file level. So, if you use a program that frequently makes changes to a large central file (like Entourage, which stores e-mail in one large database file), Time Machine will back up that entire file, even if only one item in the file has changed. This can impact wireless backup performance, depending on how large those files are. You can also use one or more external USB drives attached to the Time Capsule’s USB port as a Time Machine target.

Sony announces New High Definition Handycam® Camcorder HDR-TG5V

Sony on Thursday announced the HDR-TG5V, a high-definition (HD) camcorder that is equipped with a GPS receiver and can geotag recorded videos and still photos.

With the HDR-TG5V’s GPS receiver, as well as built in support for Navteq digital maps, Sony says that location data can be added to recorded files. You can view maps on the camcorder’s 2.7-inch LCD as well as find geotagged locations on the map. Sony includes PC software that Windows users can use to via geotag information on a map; for Mac users, the geotags can use by iPhoto ’09’s Places feature.

Using a 1/5-inch Exmor CMOS sensor, the HDR-TG5V records AVCHD video at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution and 4-megapixel still photos. The camcorder has 16GB of built-in memory, enough room for 110 minutes of video at the highest quality setting. There’s also a slot for Memory Stick Pro Duo cards to increase the storage capacity.

Macworld Buying Guides: Portable hard drives

Portable hard drives are smaller and easier to tote around than typical external desktop drives. Some feature case designs that reduce impact shock.

With portable hard drives, USB is king (it’s your only option with the MacBook Air and the latest MacBook), though there are FireWire and eSATA options. Some drives are bus-powered, which means they draw power from a FireWire or USB connection on your laptop, with no power adapter required. But some iBooks and PowerBooks do not supply enough USB bus power, so you’ll have to either use a special cable that connects the hard drive to two USB ports or use the drive’s power adapter.

There’s always the chance that you’ll lose your hard drive, so it’s wise to secure your data. Data Locker offers portable USB 2.0 hard drives (160GB [$160] or 320GB [$200]) that feature hardware encryption options and a numeric touch screen where you enter a PIN to unlock the drive. The LaCie Safe Mobile Hard Drive with Encryption ($190) provides 160GB of secure USB storage through hardware encryption and fingerprint authorization.

There’s also third-party software, like the free TrueCrypt, that encrypts content on just about any external drive. Though it’s not as secure as hardware-based encryption, software encryption can stop all but the savviest hackers from accessing sensitive data.

500GB Blu-ray Disc now feasible

A 20-layer optical disc is now viable, following research by our team of engineers at Pioneer HQ, Tokyo. Each layer of the disc can store 25GB of information to provide a mammoth 500GB of storage.

The news follows the International Symposium on Optical Memory (ISOM) and Optical Data Storage, held during July in Hawaii, where Pioneer Corporation presented its research, defining draft specifications for the 500 GB disc.

The ISOM had previously outlined the industry objective of creating a 20-layer disc to be available between 2010-2012.

With its strong support among the gaming, movie and PC industries, Blu-ray has become the de facto next generation storage system. While Blu-ray discs (BD), offering both 25GB and 50GB, are sufficient for current demands, we see the need for a technology that can support far greater capacities as HD streaming in particular becomes commonplace and users build larger files of digital content.

The multi-layered method is compatible with Blu-ray devices providing a long term future for the technology and is more easily produced when compared to competing technologies such as holographic storage.

One of the technical issues addressed was the problem of ‘crosstalk’ between the separate layers of optical media. Due to the close proximity of the layers, data from one layer could interfere with that from another layer. By applying proprietary technology developed for its BD products and by stacking two different thickness of layers alternatively, interlayer crosstalk was reduced, thus further confirming the feasibility of 20-layer optical discs.
